Scrap Happy Quilt

Ever wish you had the perfect mix of color, tone, or shade for a quilt block—but couldn’t find it? This class teaches you how to make your own fabric using scraps, so you can get exactly the look you want (like getting the center of your star to glow with just a hint of orange).

You'll learn four methods for creating custom fabric squares (4–6 inches) from scraps:

  1. Individual scrap piecing

  2. Strip piecing

  3. Crazy quilt assembly

  4. A fast hybrid paper-piecing technique

Each technique has a slightly different look. In class, you’ll make a sample of each and learn how to keep your “made fabric” flat and even though it contains many fabrics and lots of seams. We’ll also cover techniques and tricks for making scrap quilts cohesive and balanced in value and color.

By the end, you’ll have half-square triangles ready to use in a wall hanging or quilt made of a geometric pattern, stars, flying geese, or an artistic improv layout of color transitions. Once you know how to make fabric from scraps, you can create custom blocks to match any color palette.
