New York Beauty Quilt
Has paper piecing seemed complicated or too much work? This class will teach you an easy paper piecing process using freezer paper templates that can be reused. You do not have to pick out the paper once the block is constructed! You will also learn how to sew curved seams painlessly and accurately.
The New York Beauty block is a great block for using scraps and small pieces of fabric. The block has three pieces that can be mixed and matched when you put it together:
1) a center pie shape,
2) the arcs with spikes and,
3) the L shape background.
In the first class you will learn how the block is constructed, the paper piecing steps, and you will make 3 or 4 different arc/spike units for your New York Beauty blocks (8-inch finished size).
Between the first and second class, you will cut some center pie and background L shapes from your chosen fabrics. You can also make some more arcs if you want to.
In the second class, we will use the design walls to look at different layouts for both the blocks and the quilt. This quilt comes together best if you play with different combinations of color for the center pie, arc, and background sections before you assemble the blocks. You will then assemble some of your blocks focusing on how to make sewing curves easy. In this second class, you will also square up some of your blocks, which is a unique trick for this block.
At the end of the second class, you will have several New York Beauty Blocks you can assemble into a beautiful quilt!

Instructor: | Tekoa King |
Instructor Bio: | Tekoa King is a nurse-midwife who has been quilting since her grandmother taught her to sew. During her career at UCSF, she taught medical students and nursing students obstetrics. For years, she pieced quilts for family members and her grandmother and aunt hand-quilted them. During those years, she took many classes at Cotton Patch and moved through classic piecing patterns using templates to paper-piecing and designing her own patterns. Now retired, she continues to learn new quilting techniques and looks forward to sharing what she has learned through teaching. |
