Instructor: Mary Shey
Instructor Bio: Mary’s needlework journey began at the age of four when her grandmother taught her knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and origami to occupy her time and energy while she was bedridden with childhood illnesses. It has been a lifelong passion. In 2014, Mary underwent surgery to remove a cancerous kidney, which temporarily prevented her from pursuing her intricate needle-turn-applique projects due to their extensive preparation steps. Feeling disheartened, she recalled the ribbon embroidery her grandmother had shown her long ago. Discovering a ribbon embroidery (RE) kit with floral patterns on canvas, multi-colored ribbons, and a needle, she quickly became enamored with the craft, completing one RE kit project after another. The more she immersed herself in ribbon embroidery, the more determined she became to revive this art form, once popular in places like the Court of Versailles, the Forbidden City in China, and used as an appliqué technique in clothing and dance regalia among Native American tribes of the Prairie and Great Lakes regions, which had since fallen into obscurity. Mary traveled to China to find reliable manufacturers of high-quality ribbon embroidery kits, bringing back a variety of designs in different levels of complexity. Her goal is to ignite interest in learning and applying these stitches. Mary aims to inspire people with the beauty of their creations.
