Paper Piecing: Holiday Cards
Has paper piecing seemed too complicated or too much work? This class will teach you how to paper piece in a way that is easy, fast, precise, and fun as you make fabric greeting cards. It is a great technique for using scraps and small pieces of fabric that you have been saving.
- This paper piecing technique is easy. You do not have to tear off the paper when you are done sewing.
- The instructor will supply each student with 5 cards and envelopes (Strathmore photo frame cards), two vellum foundation papers and a choice of several different foundation paper piece patterns.
- The patterns will feature themes for upcoming holidays (e.g., Halloween, fall, Christmas and Hannukah blocks as well as spring flowers and a birthday theme).
- You will get to choose which the pattern(s) you want to make in class and then trace that pattern onto the foundation paper(s) before we start sewing. You can take home any of the other patterns you like to make more cards at home.
By the end of class, you will have 2-3 cards completed and you will have learned how to construct any quilt block pattern that uses foundation piecing. (Note: the patterns you will be given in this class can be enlarged and used in different combinations to make a table runner, or wall hanging in future projects.)
Once you learn how to paper piece, you may want to do a lot more of it! Additional patterns, newsprint, freezer paper, and a light box will be available so you can copy a few patterns to make at home.

Instructor: | Tekoa King |
Instructor Bio: | Tekoa King is a nurse-midwife who has been quilting since her grandmother taught her to sew. During her career at UCSF, she taught medical students and nursing students obstetrics. For years, she pieced quilts for family members and her grandmother and aunt hand-quilted them. During those years, she took many classes at Cotton Patch and moved through classic piecing patterns using templates to paper-piecing and designing her own patterns. Now retired, she continues to learn new quilting techniques and looks forward to sharing what she has learned through teaching. |
